  14.   The 45th Psalm provides us with a beautiful picture of Christ
  15. and His bride. A great marriage is about to take place, and the
  16. writer is "boiling over" with ecstasy and excitement: 
  17.  
  18.      *********************************************
  19.        "My heart is inditing [boiling over] a good 
  20.      matter..." (Psalm 45:1).
  21.      ********************************************* 
  22.  
  23.   The psalmist can hardly contain himself. He is trying to
  24. describe something he sees in his mind's eye - an incredible
  25. ceremony, with a grand and glorious Bridegroom and a beautiful
  26. bride dressed in gold! 
  27.  
  28.   Several years ago, the entire world was mesmerized by the royal
  29. wedding in England. Millions around the globe were glued to TV
  30. sets as Princess Diana and Prince Charles were married. It was
  31. one of the most glamorous and celebrated of weddings in modern
  32. history.
  33.  
  34.   TV networks had "color commentators" who described every detail
  35. of the proceedings. News clips showed the princely, regal life of
  36. Charles - his polo matches, his duties as prince, and his
  37. inheritance as the next king of England - his throne, his riches,
  38. his palace. 
  39.  
  40.   The commentators also described in exquisite detail everything
  41. about Princess Di. And the picture was incredible: her hairstyle,
  42. her royal gown, her retinue, her shoes, her ornaments, her ring,
  43. her flowers, her royal carriage. Even during the wedding
  44. ceremony, as the couple stood together at the altar, a
  45. commentator whispered details into a microphone: "Isn't she
  46. beautiful? Look at her shoes, her flowers..." 
  47.  
  48.   It was romantic, breathtaking - a prince and a princess united
  49. in holy marriage "until death do part." People all over the globe
  50. wept at the sight. But today we have lived to see this marriage
  51. disintegrate into one of the most sordid, ugly breakups on the
  52. face of the earth! 
  53.  
  54.   The marriage described in Psalm 45, on the other hand, is a
  55. union far more glorious and grand. It too is full of romance,
  56. beauty, majesty - but it is a marriage that will never end. It is
  57. meant for eternal glory!
  58.

  61.                This Wedding Is All About King 
  62.                     Jesus Taking A Bride!
  63.                ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  64.  
  65.   At this very moment, you and I are seated in heavenly places
  66. with King Jesus. Yet, much greater than that, we are engaged to
  67. Him! And soon a grand and glorious marriage will take place - a
  68. majestic royal wedding beyond anything this world has ever seen.
  69. The commentator for this marriage is the Holy Spirit, who unfolds
  70. to us a glorious scene: 
  71.  
  72.   * King Jesus is standing before His throne - His royal scepter
  73. in His hand, His garments full of the wonderful aroma of myrrh
  74. and aloes. He has come from the ivory palace of His Father, where
  75. He has been anointed with the oil of gladness. 
  76.  
  77.   * He is dressed in His full military regalia. His glittering
  78. sword is strapped upon His thigh. He has conquered all His
  79. enemies, and His kingdom is secure. He reigns in peace and power,
  80. Victor over all. And, Scripture says, He is "...fairer than the
  81. children of men: grace is poured into thy lips..." (Psalm 45:2). 
  82.  
  83.   * Every battle this King has fought - every enemy He has laid
  84. low, every act of grace and mercy He has provided - has been for
  85. His bride. It all has been meant for this moment. And now He is
  86. ecstatic, beaming with joy, full of excitement - because He
  87. anticipates being joined to His beautiful bride. He gazes down
  88. the long corridor of the palace, waiting for her to approach with
  89. all her retinue! 
  90.  
  91.   The psalmist tells us that the Bridegroom could have chosen a
  92. bride from many honorable daughters in the kingdom. "Kings'
  93. daughters were among thy honourable women..." (Psalm 45:9). But
  94. He chose only one: "...upon thy right hand did stand the queen in
  95. gold of Ophir" (same verse). 
  96.  
  97.   Now, Ophir gold was the purest, most refined gold made in those
  98. days. And this bride is adorned in it. What a sight she is, as
  99. she is "...brought unto the king..." (verse 14). She absolutely
  100. glows, because her heart is pure. 
  101.  
  102.   Her golden gown glistens with incredible needlework. This isn't
  103. some broad cloth picked out of endless yards; it has been
  104. intricately interwoven with threads of the purest gold. And its
  105. gold ornaments shine forth spectacularly.
  106.  
  107.   The queen in gold marches toward the King with great fanfare.
  108. And what a glorious sound - tambourines, trumpets, stringed
  109. instruments! Behind her, as far as the eye can see, is her
  110. retinue - an army of virgins, all dressed in white, singing,
  111. dancing, praising with great joy. The bride is leading the whole
  112. procession - and they're coming to meet the King of Kings and
  113. Lord of Lords. 
  114.  
  115.   Finally, the queen takes her place at the King's right hand.
  116. And everyone is rejoicing - because this is the royal wedding of
  117. eternity! "...the virgins her companions that follow her shall be
  118. brought unto thee. With gladness and rejoicing shall they be
  119. brought: they shall enter into the king's palace" (verses 14-15). 
  120.  
  121.   Talk about a Holy-Ghost revival meeting! Can you imagine the
  122. scene? This wedding is the purpose, the highlight, of all
  123. Creation. There stands King Jesus, His heart full of joy. And
  124. here comes His bride - the redeemed of mankind - dressed in pure
  125. gold, the righteousness of Christ! 
  126.  
  127.   Yet, I want to stop here for a moment. So far, this looks like
  128. another romantic, royal wedding. My question is: Just who is this
  129. bride in gold? 
  130.  
  131.   Some commentators say this psalm merely describes an historical
  132. marriage between King Joram of Judah and Athaliah. Scholarship
  133. shows that there was a great, royal wedding at the time. But to
  134. say this psalm is about that wedding is mere conjecture. 
  135.  
  136.   I agree with most spiritually-minded scholars that this psalm
  137. is messianic. And I believe its message is very clear: It's about
  138. Jesus and His bride! The Bridegroom is our King and Lord, Jesus
  139. Christ. And the bride is His church - believers who have prepared
  140. themselves for His coming - who yearn for Him with great
  141. expectancy, and whose hearts are without spot or wrinkle. 
  142.  
  143.      ******************************************************
  144.        "And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming 
  145.      down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride 
  146.      adorned for her husband.... And there came unto me one 
  147.      of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of 
  148.      the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, 
  149.      Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb's 
  150.      wife.
  151.  
  152.        "And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and 
  153.      high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy
  154.      Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, having 
  155.      the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone 
  156.      most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as 
  157.      crystal" (Revelation 21:2, 9-11). 
  158.      *******************************************************
  159.  
  160.   This picture in Revelation 21 is a beautiful picture of the
  161. last-day church of Jesus Christ! The great, holy city descending
  162. out of heaven is His spotless bride - the overcoming church
  163. seated with Him right now in heavenly places. This church is
  164. built upon the foundation of gospel truths of the twelve
  165. apostles. And it is surrounded by walls and gates that keep out
  166. everything impure and uninvited.
  167.  
  168.   Scripture also speaks of a pure, crystal water, which
  169. represents a clear conscience. And that is another component of
  170. this last-day church: It is transparent, pure, walking in the
  171. light - with no other temple but Christ!
  172.

  174.                As the Queen Stands Before Her Bridegroom, 
  175.                The Wedding About to Begin, the Voice of a 
  176.                Third Party Is Heard!
  177.                ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  178.  
  179.   The queen in gold is honored, favored, greatly adorned. And now
  180. she stands at her Beloved's right hand, the marriage about to be
  181. performed. But before the ceremony begins, a voice whispers an
  182. admonition to her: "Hearken, O daughter, and consider..." (Psalm
  183. 45:10). 
  184.  
  185.   I believe this voice is the Holy Ghost, warning all who are
  186. called by His name. He is speaking a word to overcomers - to
  187. those most in love with Jesus - saying, "Harken, consider,
  188. listen!" This voice comes to the bride in the final moments just
  189. before the marriage is to be consummated. 
  190.  
  191.   Now, you must understand - the queen has already been chosen.
  192. Her heart has already been won to her Bridegroom. She has left
  193. her home, family and country and has committed herself to Him.
  194. And she is full of joy because she passionately loves the King. 
  195.  
  196.   So, let me ask you: Do you think of yourself as chosen by the
  197. Lord? Are you the blood-covered, redeemed apple of His eye? Do
  198. you love Him with all your heart? Have you forsaken all the
  199. world, all your past, for Him? Can you say, "He is mine, and I am
  200. committed to Him. Lord, I love You with all my heart!" 
  201.  
  202.   My point is this: If you want to be in the bride of Christ, you
  203. must be concerned with more than simply escaping a godless hell.
  204. Rather, you must desire not to be absent on that great wedding
  205. day! You must shudder at the very thought of not being His bride
  206. - of not being in His embrace, not spending eternity with Him. 
  207.  
  208.   The Holy Ghost's message to the bride was: "...forget also
  209. thine own people, and thy father's house" (Psalm 45:10). The
  210. still, small voice was
  211. whispering, "It's not enough
  212. just to leave your past behind. You must also forget it all - put
  213. it out of your mind - all past loves and distractions!"
  214.  
  215.   Jesus said, "...Whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all
  216. that he hath, he cannot be my disciple" (Luke 14:33). And the
  217. messenger here is saying to the bride, "Are you counting the cost
  218. as you prepare to be united to Him?  Or are you going to give Him
  219. mere lip service after the wedding? Have you started a commitment
  220. you're willing to finish? Or does your mind wander back to things
  221. of your past - old friends,
  222. old habits, old loves? If you commit to this marriage, you must
  223. not only leave your past behind - you must forget it completely!" 
  224.  
  225.   Are the Holy Spirit's words a call for us to physically leave
  226. family, job, career? No - never! His warning isn't an excuse to
  227. escape the obligations of marriage or family. In fact, the Bible
  228. is full of commands and warnings about providing for our
  229. household. We are to cling to our mate, care for our relatives
  230. and raise our children in the fear of God.
  231.  
  232.   No, this isn't just a physical call. When Jesus speaks of some
  233. "not forsaking all," He is speaking of those who turn from Him
  234. and cling to idols. An idol is anything that becomes the sole
  235. focus of our devotion - anything that possesses our time,
  236. attention, money, love, interest. 
  237.  
  238.      *******************************************************
  239.        "And they forsook the Lord God of their fathers...and
  240.      followed other gods..." (Judges 2:12).
  241.      *******************************************************

  245.                I Want to Speak Particularly 
  246.                to Husbands And Wives!
  247.                ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  248.  
  249.   I'll address husbands first. Many men can rightly say they are
  250. good providers. They work long and hard, don't waste their money,
  251. dress their children adequately and spend quality time with their
  252. family. But how much time do they devote to Jesus? Do they have
  253. what I call a "leaving-and-forgetting time" - a time when they
  254. mentally leave and forget everything, setting aside quality time
  255. for Jesus alone? 
  256.  
  257.   A man can do this on the job, while driving to work, anytime.
  258. It's a time to set aside all thoughts of work, family, children
  259. and say, "This is Your time, Jesus. I'm Yours alone right now. No
  260. one is more important to me!" 
  261.  
  262.   Please don't misunderstand me: The problem isn't business or
  263. family or career. Rather, it is "loitering" - idle, aimless,
  264. lounging around and wasting time. Multitudes of God's people
  265. spend their time endlessly loitering - idly spending time with
  266. friends or lolling in front of a TV. We loiter away so many
  267. precious hours - and we neglect our Lord and Savior! 
  268.  
  269.   Now I want to speak to wives: You have given your husband and
  270. children the best years of your life. You are hardworking and
  271. faithful. You take good care of your family. Yet, I ask you: How
  272. much "leaving-and-forgetting time" do you give to Jesus? How many
  273. hours a week do you shut the world out and draw close to Him? 
  274.  
  275.   Grandfathers, grandmothers, singles, everyone - one day you're
  276. going to stand before the judgment seat to account for your time.
  277. And God keeps accurate books! He knows exactly how many hours
  278. you've spent on "good" things - your children, your spouse, your
  279. interests. But He is going to place that on His scales - and then
  280. measure it against the few hours you gave Him! Do you think those
  281. scales are even going to move? 
  282.  
  283.   How jealous the Lord must be over all our other loves - all the
  284. things that eat up our time and attention. The old adage is true:
  285. It's not the "bad" that is the enemy of the Christian, but the
  286. "good": It's family, career, job, children. Yet these things in
  287. themselves don't stand between us and the Lord. No - it's our
  288. loitering! We could easily take hold of our time for Jesus' sake
  289. - but we don't! 
  290.  
  291.   Now the Lord stands before us, asking: "...lovest thou me more
  292. than these...?" (John 21:15).
  293.  
  294.                ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  295.                Whatever You Love Most Will Get Most 
  296.                of Your Time and Attention!
  297.                ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  298.  
  299.   God is a jealous lover! "...for the Lord, whose name is
  300. Jealous, is a jealous God" (Exodus 34:14). 
  301.  
  302.   Indeed, it is possible for us to provoke Him to jealousy: "Do
  303. we provoke the Lord to jealousy?..." (1 Corinthians 10:22). Paul
  304. is asking: "You have testified that you love Him. You've even
  305. taken His name. Yet, has someone or something else stolen your
  306. heart?"
  307.  
  308.   As a faithful shepherd, I am called by the Spirit of God to
  309. warn you: When the day of judgment comes, you may not be in the
  310. bride of Christ! And when you stand before the Bridegroom, He
  311. won't say, "Here is My beloved, who spent so much time with Me. 
  312.  
  313.   You couldn't wait to wake up to meet Me, and You didn't go to
  314. bed without talking to Me. You have been waiting for Me
  315. expectantly - and now we are one. Nothing will part us!" 
  316.  
  317.   No! Instead, Jesus will turn His face away from you. He will
  318. say, "You loved Me with words - but your heart was far from Me.
  319. You went to church and called that 'quality time' with Me. But
  320. there was no intimacy, no private time. You were seldom with Me,
  321. seldom in My presence. I don't know you. Depart from Me!" 
  322.  
  323.      **************************************************
  324.        "Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her 
  325.      attire? yet my people have forgotten me days 
  326.      without number" (Jeremiah 2:32).
  327.  
  328.        "How shall we escape, if we neglect so great 
  329.      salvation..." (Hebrews 2:3). 
  330.      **************************************************
  331.  
  332.   You can say you love Jesus; you can go to church every time the
  333. doors are open. But do you seek Him when your time is your own? 
  334.  
  335.   How many books do you devour - how many magazines and
  336. newspapers, how much TV and radio - and yet you never give a
  337. thought to spending time with Christ? Beloved, time is running
  338. out! Soon you'll stand before Jesus. And how will you escape His
  339. judgment then, when you have been given every opportunity to know
  340. Him now? 
  341.  
  342.   Think of whole nations begging for Bibles - old Russian mothers
  343. who cry for even a New Testament! Think of the thousands of
  344. Eastern European pastors and believers who now sit devouring the
  345. Word, weeping at its glorious truth. Then think of your own Bible
  346. (if you even know where it is) - and how you neglect it! 
  347.  
  348.   Preachers search their Bibles for sermons. Sunday-school
  349. teachers study it for lessons. But why do we not turn to it for
  350. recreational reading, to be refreshed by our Lord? Why don't we
  351. open it to learn of Him, to love Him? 
  352.  
  353.   The Bible is Jesus - God's own Word! It is the full revelation
  354. of His heart. Everything about Him is unmasked there. And I would
  355. think that if you truly love Him - if you expect to spend
  356. eternity as His bride - then you'd want to learn everything about
  357. Him that you can! 
  358.  
  359.   Right now many Christians are being branded in their very
  360. souls. Perhaps you are one. Will you go to the judgment with
  361. these words marking you: Christ Neglecter? Have you rejected Him,
  362. making no time for prayer or His Word? If so, how will you
  363. escape?
  364.  
  365.                ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  366.                Many Have Had Their Hearts Won to the 
  367.                Lord - But Have Never Been Satisfied 
  368.                by Him!
  369.                ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  370.  
  371.  
  372.   It's not enough for Jesus to win your heart. He has to be the
  373. satisfaction of your heart! Yet, there are many believers who
  374. have never been satisfied with Jesus. They're always up or down
  375. according to their circumstances. 
  376.  
  377.   That is not a suitable bride for this Bridegroom. No, a certain
  378. beauty must adorn His bride in order to attract Him: "So shall
  379. the king greatly desire thy beauty..." (Psalm 45:11). But what is
  380. this beauty?
  381.  
  382.   You probably have sung of the beauty of holiness: "...worship
  383. the Lord in the beauty of holiness" (Psalm 29:2). This beauty is
  384. beheld in God's eyes; it is what Jesus sees in us that attracts
  385. Him. It's what is beautiful about us in His eyes! 
  386.  
  387.   And the Holy Ghost is saying to the bride in gold, "If you will
  388. lay aside everything, forget all others and adorn yourself for
  389. Him alone - then He will desire your beauty!" This means no job,
  390. no person, no relationship can come between you! 
  391.  
  392.   I heard a godly wife say, "The more godly my husband becomes,
  393. the more attractive he is to me." Indeed, that is what a godly
  394. marriage is all about. And, likewise, the more you give yourself
  395. in entire devotion to the Lord, the more attractive and beautiful
  396. you become to Him. 
  397.  
  398.   "So shall the king greatly desire thy beauty..." (Psalm 45:11).
  399. What an incredible thought: Jesus will not be able to stay away
  400. from you! In fact, the Hebrew meaning of beauty here includes the
  401. word lust (with righteous connotations). It signifies a strong
  402. yearning and desire. In other words, Jesus will draw close to you
  403. - overflowing with desire for you! 
  404.  
  405.   I have performed many weddings in my lifetime. And there was
  406. never a groom who didn't smile with delight at his bride,
  407. thinking, "She's all mine!" Beloved, that is the beauty I'm
  408. talking about. Our Bridegroom rejoices, saying of His bride, "I'm
  409. the apple of her eye. She'd rather spend time with Me than with
  410. anyone else. And that makes her beautiful to Me!" 
  411.  
  412.   I want to be beautiful in Jesus' eyes. I want to worship Him in
  413. the beauty of holiness. He is not merely "first" in my life; He
  414. is everything. And the Bible says He is drawn to me because of
  415. that! 
  416.  
  417.   Indeed, the bride in gold has an inner beauty that makes her
  418. outwardly beautiful. She is "...all glorious within..." (verse
  419. 13) because she is devoted to her Bridegroom. He knows beyond any
  420. shadow of a doubt, "She is all Mine - devoted only to Me! She
  421. worships Me and is submissive to Me. I am the only One in her
  422. life, the sole focus of her attention. She makes time for Me, is
  423. overjoyed in My presence, and desires to be with Me continually.
  424. What beautiful devotion!"
  425.  
  426.                ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  427.                In Closing, I Want to Ask You an 
  428.                Important Question:
  429.                ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  430.  
  431.   If Jesus were to come tonight, would you be in the great
  432. marriage procession, approaching the throne? Or would you find
  433. yourself standing before a jealous, jilted Lover? 
  434.  
  435.   Our Lord yearns after us, wanting our time and attention - and
  436. yet He sees us spending all our time on other people, other
  437. things. And that makes Him burn with jealousy! The day is coming
  438. when His jealousy will "smoke" against those who turn to vain
  439. idols (Deuteronomy 29:20). It will burst into flames of judgment!
  440.  
  441.   Beloved, when that day comes, will Jesus take your hand with
  442. delight and whisper, "At last - we're together! You have desired
  443. Me so. You have given Me the best of your life, your time, your
  444. attention. Come, now - let us be one!" 
  445.  
  446.   Or, will He say to you: "I'm sorry - I don't know you. You said
  447. you loved Me, but your actions never matched your words. You had
  448. time for a lot of things - family, children, grandchildren, loved
  449. ones, career. But you neglected Me. We were never intimate; I
  450. never had your heart. And now it's too late!"
  451.  
  452.   How will you stand before Him on that day? Everything of this
  453. world is going to burn. But what about your intimacy with Him?
  454. Will you be able to stand before Him, because you shut out the
  455. world and cried, "Jesus, I want to know You!" 
  456.  
  457.   The Holy Spirit is whispering to you right now: "Harken -
  458. listen! Forget everything else, and start anew today. If you have
  459. missed Him altogether, confess it to your heavenly Father. Repent
  460. - and devote yourself wholly to your Bridegroom!" 
  461.  
  462.   Pray with me right now: 
  463.  
  464.  
  465.      ***************************************************
  466.        "O blessed Lamb of God, I want to be beautiful in 
  467.      Your sight! Forgive me for neglecting Your Word, 
  468.      for rejecting Your revealed heart. Forgive me for 
  469.      spending so much time on everything else but You. 
  470.      And give me a new heart to know You. I want to grow 
  471.      in intimacy with You!" 
  472.      ***************************************************
  473.  
  474.   Give the Lord all your devotion - your time, your attention,
  475. your thoughts, your finances - and He will take care of all such
  476. things. You won't have to seek after them as the heathen do;
  477. instead, He will add them to your life liberally. 
  478.  
  479.   The Lord has promised to take care of you. And if you turn to
  480. Him with your whole heart, He will walk in covenant with you and
  481. your family. So give Him your wholehearted attention. Act as His
  482. bride - and you will become beautiful in His sight! Amen!
